20 month old Sully was riding a little bike when he tipped over and was having trouble getting back up. Knowing he wasn't hurt, I looked at his friends and said, "Oh no, Sully crashed. Is he okay? Does Sully need help?"
20 month old Soren, and 25 month old Rory ran to his aid! Rory took Sully by the arm to help him stand, while Soren picked up the bike and held it out to Sully. As soon as Sully was back on his bike, Rory ran back to the path and Soren ran back to his bike and the three children continued their play. Do we give children enough credit for being capable and empathic? I love testing these questions and experimenting with their grasp of language, by seeing how they respond to statements like the one above. Next test... see if they recognize when their friend needs help without a prompt from an educator. Comments are closed.
