If you have any questions please give us a call.]]><![CDATA[More Help From Friends]]>Thu, 11 Mar 2021 17:59:46 GMThttps://www.salmochildrenscentre.net/whats-new/more-help-from-friends20 month old Sully was riding a little bike when he tipped over and was having trouble getting back up.  Knowing he wasn't hurt, I looked at his friends and said, "Oh no, Sully crashed.  Is he okay?  Does Sully need help?"
20 month old Soren, and 25 month old Rory ran to his aid!
Rory took Sully by the arm to help him stand, while Soren picked up the bike and held it out to Sully.
As soon as Sully was back on his bike, Rory ran back to the path and Soren ran back to his bike and the three children continued their play.
Do we give children enough credit for being capable and empathic?  I love testing these questions and experimenting with their grasp of language, by seeing how they respond to statements like the one above.  Next test... see if they recognize when their friend needs help without a prompt from an educator.]]><![CDATA[A Little Help From My Friends]]>Thu, 28 Jan 2021 08:00:00 GMThttps://www.salmochildrenscentre.net/whats-new/a-little-help-from-my-friendsWhen we got to daycare this morning the sidewalks were still covered with beautiful soft, fresh snow.  Two of my 19 month old friends saw me with the shovel, and they went right to the bin to get their own.  Their sense of purpose and determination was apparent, as they spent time moving the snow.  One can only shovel for so long, before the temptation of a bite of new snow takes over!

Our children must be the luckiest in the world!
Thanks to funding from Royal Canadian Legion Branch #217, Salmo Lions Club, the Province of BC and Columbia Basin Trust, the generosity of Scrap King Autowrecking and Towing, Deb and Grant Sorenson, and Christine Watson, and the creative talents of Tristan Ray and the crew of Rock Solid Masonry, we once again have a playground fit for our children!

Julia, the Early Years Cultural Advisor from the Circle of Indigenous Nations Society, brought some hand drums to share with us today!  We sang 2 songs about animals, and we talked about amazing things that the Earth gives us.  Some local animals that the children mentioned were squirrels, bears, cougars, elk, deer and moose.  Later when we came inside, one of our friends was blowing into a tube and exclaimed, "It makes a moose call!"  We are looking forward to exploring more deeply, the ways that we interact with the natural world!

Turtles and snakes weren't the only things that were trying to swim in Rosebud Lake on Thursday!  Outdoors is such an easy place to be...
How did we spend 4 hours at the Lake, you ask?  Swimming, snacking, singing, reading, searching, watching, listening, tasting, walking.
​The scavenger hunt finds were many!  The best finds were the huckleberries, and they weren't even on the list!
